Background

Transforming Communities Group (TCG) is a community-based organization located in Wakiso, the largest and most populated district in Uganda. TCG is driven by a vision of a culture where communities themselves provide the cradle of support for vulnerable children, meeting immediate needs such as education, health, and food. It is built on the spirit of sharing what we have with those who do not, with the bigger goal of collective, communal growth. I hold a deep belief that "one milestone together is better than a lifetime full of them alone."

My name is Boneventure Brian Kawere. I am a Ugandan Public Health Specialist, and together with my wife, Justine Kawere an educationist and mathematics major, we are parents to four wonderful children. Although my early career focused on orphans and vulnerable children during the early rollout of free antiretroviral therapy in Uganda, it is truly my wife's work as a school teacher that has drawn our family closer to many more children in our community. Spending a lot of time around children, and her love for them, has inspired our family to take a closer look at how much we can do by simply sharing the little we have.

We have learned that children who are sick cannot attend school; hungry children find it difficult to understand what is taught; and children who are feeling down or unwell do not perform well academically. Because of this, we decided to start committing a small portion of our monthly salaries to help transform our community beginning with the most vulnerable children around us.

Mission

To build a sustainable, community-led support system that identifies and supports vulnerable children with basic healthcare, education, and opportunities for talent development, while nurturing a sense of responsibility and "giving back" so that today's beneficiaries become tomorrow's supporters.

  • Establish and maintain a community-based system to identify and support vulnerable children.
  • Ensure continuous access to basic healthcare, quality education, and skills development.
  • Grow responsibility, empathy, and "giving back" to sustain a cycle of care.
